When might I use OCR?

If you mean Optical Character Recognition then there are many applicaitons of this technology. Any machine printed document can be converted to character form using OCR. I have developed systems for Xerox Europe, BMW, British Railways Board, ATOC and Dresdner Bank that have OCR and ICR technolgy embedded in the solution somewhere. Invariably the paper documents are converted to images and the text stored where appropriate to allow for rapid recall of searches based on content. The documents and their associated attributes and textfiles are stored in Document Management Systems (such as Documentum, FileNet etc). Check out companies like Actionpoint (www.actionpoint.com), SER or Kofax that specialise in this kind of software for more details.
