Functional languages
OCR Computing AS and A Level Discussion Board: 2509 - Systems Software, Architecture, Databases and Paradigms: Functional languages
Anyone know where there are some clear notes about functional languages? I have the examiners cd but i find it hard to understand.
Yeh me 2. Our teacher doesnt understand functional languages so how are we supposed to prepare for the exam
Add my name to the list. We want functional languages notes (that everyone can understand)!!! There was a question in a recent paper so it is really important. HELLLPPPP.
If any teacher out there knows of any practical courses on functional languages, or know if OCR are going to offer a training day, perhaps they could post the details here. I bet that 95% of teachers cannot teach this topic.
I have never seen any courses in colleges or from any exam board that deal with functional languages and never touched them as part of my Computing degree. I have no objection to the exam board putting it in the syllabus but you would have thought they would ensure that clear opportunities are available to educators to learn to teach the topic, given that it is such an obscure area!!
Well put. This is a classic reason why teachers moan at exam boards. And still, after 4 years of moaning, zilch has been done about it. Well done OCR - really listening to teachers.
OCR do go to great pains to listen to teachers concerns. For example, they have set up discussion forums where you can share you concerns and share ideas. They then point to these and say 'Look! We are listening'. And then, of course, they ignore all comments made. OCR are far more concerned with appearances than actually making improvements. All I ever hear at meetings with OCR is 'send us an email about it', 'sorry - we know there is a problem and we are looking into what to do about it', 'Yes we are having a meeting about that next week/month/year', 'Thanks ever so much for bringing this to our attention. That's exactly the sort of feedback we need' etc. In the four years of meetings that I have attended, OCR have changed NOT ONE THING to rectify the shortcomings of the Computing course raised over and over and over again by teachers. Shame on OCR and those who run it.
There is a large problem I think with teachers being able to get the skills they need to keep themselves up-to-date. The exam board needs to do more to provide training for topics like functional languages, which, as a previous writer pointed out, are obscure. They could also do more to promote courses for e.g. VB.net during term time. I absolutely refuse to go to anymore evening and holiday courses with the new teacher's contract now in place.
why cant OCR just make a revision guide thats to OUR use and shows us everything. i must have gone thru loads and spent loads on revision guides just to find all the info i need.even stil havnt got it all.would have been so much better.too late now neway.got my exam in 2 weeks!
Hi, I wonder how many teachers really understand the topic on BNF and EBNF as well. Can anyone recommend me some good books. Thanks in advance
i used to think there were major problems with the computing course last year when i was doing AS, but now ive realised how completely easy it is and that no one can complain about it. Whats so hard about bnf, if u can think at all you can figure it out. I don't see whats so hard about understanding a few simple, logical ideas and definitions. Just read a few mark schemes. Theres nothing wrong with the questions, its just most people are pretty dumb and think that the exam should be at their level, well what about people with brains? Look at maths and further maths (i do ocr mei). It was easy before (modules like p5 wernt easy, but were at a suitable level where if you work hard you could do it, which people seem scared of) and now theyve made it 10 times easier to cater for lazy people.
