OCR Computing AS and A Level Discussion Board: 2508 - Computer Systems Development and Practical Applications: 2508 Results
By sid on Monday, September 16, 2002 - 07:42 pm:

could people who have done the module 2508 this summer, tell me whether the marks in their schools and colleges were unusually low for this module, or if there were any other discrepencies.

By Dave on Tuesday, September 17, 2002 - 09:11 pm:

Unusually low is not the word. I work in a grammar school. For 2506, 70 odd percent of pupils got an A or B. For the coursework, it was even higher. For 2508, most got D, E and there were a lot of Us. We only had two people out of 27 get a B. Noone got an A. I'm confident that all will be better after everyone takes their January 2003 resit in 2508 - I recommended to all that they didn't cash in their final AS grade (unless they got an A). I hope it will be better for this year's year 12 because I have far more focused notes and tasks but I suspect that we will ultimately run into the same problem as last year - too many topics and not enough time.

By Tim Ault (Tim) on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 11:04 am:

I wonder whether the row that has erupted over A level marks in the last week has something to with the low marks which many students have got in 2508.

At the root of the problem with the A2 marks is the need to maintain the A level standard with previous years. When the board looked at the AS marks they had already awarded and this summer's A2 papers, they realised that they had two options: a) award a lot more high grades than before b) artificially reduce the A2 marks. As we know, they option b).

So did the board decide to mark this year's AS a bit harder, to avoid this problem recurring next year?

Another explanation could be that the year 12 students were competing against year 13 students who were retaking this module. Our year 13 students improved their marks on this module by 10 - 30 marks by retaking. Our AS students scored a range of marks (B-U), all of which were lower than they scored in 2506 / 2507.

I should say that I am not an examiner, so these are just my ideas. It would be nice to hear from someone who can give an insight from the inside. Also I haven't heard of any major problems with the Computing A level grades. All the discussion in the press has been about English, History and Psychology.

By Dave on Monday, September 23, 2002 - 06:33 pm:

The grade boundaries for this module are illuminating. The raw marks for the module, as a percentage of the total marks available for the module are as follows:

For an E grade, you needed just 27% of the available marks!
For a D grade, you needed 32%.
For a C, it was 38%.
For a B, it was 44%.
And for a shiny new A grade, you needed 51%!!! just 46 marks out of the 90 available in the paper.

Now this must tell us something. The boundaries are so low because few could attempt more than a stab at the questions - I also think some of the questions were bizarre both in what they were asking and the language used to describe the question. Poor exam checking / quality control?

In my opinion - too many topics, not enough time, pure and simple. This isn't good for anyone. Do we really want to put our pupils through resits in January if we can help it?

I do like the course, I like the practical paper and I like the challenge but the syllabus isn't attainable or achievable as it stands and wish OCR would come down off their high horse, listen to teachers and address the problem as a matter of urgency. Blaming teachers as they do in the Examiners Report isn't the way forward in this case. They haven't held back blaming you and me in the Report, have they?

I wonder what the paper will be like this time around, for the re-take in January.

I took both the summer 02 exam and the january 03 resit after being disapointed with my mark. After the exam i thought that it had done much better but then got the result today and discoverd i had scored 15 marks lower! Does this sound familier to anybody else.

I got 52/90 in june 02 exam (D), and 88/90 in the Jan 03 exam (A). This was the 2508 module!
sid got 81/90 in the resit. Most ppl in our school managed to improve their mark substantially this time around.

scott, i think u should get your paper checked out, it doesn't sound right.
