DFD verses System flowchart (May 2002 exam)
OCR Computing AS and A Level Discussion Board: 2508 - Computer Systems Development and Practical Applications: DFD verses System flowchart (May 2002 exam)
By Ron on Tuesday, June 25, 2002 - 09:09 pm:

I taught my pupils that a Systems Flowchart is just another name for a DFD, as per Leadbetter/Blackford, 3.1.4

Can someone help me understand the May 2002 question two, please?

2a) State two items included in a DFD.
2b) State two items included in a system flowchart?

Cheers

The definition I use is that a DFD does (as it says) and shows entities, processes & data movement(flow) through the system.

A system flowchart again shows processes & data flows but additionally shows actual hardware used for input/output/storage and files used (master/transaction etc).

At University (the only time I've used these for real!) we tended to use a Systems Flowchart to depict the overall system and then several data flow diagrams to show data flow through individual modules of the system.

Afraid I've tended to teach from my own notes rather than Leadbetter/Blackford so I don't know what they say!

Anyone agree with my definition?

I do not agree that a DFD is the same as a system flowchart. Many university texts have good explanation of these two.

System flowchart is so dated, why is it still on the
syllabus? I really think it is the time for OCR to rewrite the syllabus?
