Task 3
OCR Computing AS and A Level Discussion Board: 2507 - Structured Practical Computing Tasks: Task 3

By Dave Cooper on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 - 07:18 pm:

Task 3

I've had a good look at the tasks this weekend. 1, 2 and 4 look fairly standard and the programming question is far easier (and quicker to do) than last year's. At the risk of offending programming purists, you may want to consider doing this in QBASIC!!! Although some teachers are probably having heart attacks at the very thought of teaching this old, old language, file handling is very straightforward in QBASIC, the language is a doddle to teach, QBASIC is there on everyone's machine (or downloadable for free) and task 3 is an afternoon's work after 2 or 3 weeks of teaching. We'll save Java for the A2 year this time round!!

What do other's think they will use?

I will use Visual Basic again... but it will be practically the same as using QBASIC as I will not use any of the new fangled filestream objects or anything OO. JUst good old BASIC file handling as it was 20 years ago!

yeh the programming stuff is easy, theres just one thing i dont understand. when it says if second = "%" does the % refer to a number or an actual % sign. Same for the $ sign, does that mean any character or the actual $ sign.

Thanx, Donovan

It means the actual "%" and "$" characters...

:)

hi,

I just handed in my Computing Coursework and my teacher thinks i have cheated on a programming task. i'am doing AS OCR Computing and it is Task3 that he thinks i cheated on, although i did recieve guidence from a tutor on that task. shall i tell my teacher this or will i be disqualified from computing and AS chemistry as it is also OCR exam board.

My teacher disqualifed 20 students last year for minor stuff, i'am really worried and will appreciate any help.
